Just 20 minutes from Christchurch and almost hidden by glorious century-old gardens is one of New Zealand’s most important historic homes and best kept secrets – Otahuna Lodge. Built in 1895 for Sir Heaton Rhodes, the three-storey homestead has been lovingly restored to her original grandeur, yet boasting all the modern amenities you would expect in an exclusive luxury lodge. Otahuna is one of those rare homes where history and charm marries happily with unadulterated luxury. The Victorian interior is still very much as it was when the house was built. The modern touches blend seamlessly with their late 19th century surroundings.
The name 'Otahuna' is Maori, the language of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. Otahuna means 'the little hill amongst the hills', which is very apt as the homestead was built atop a little hill providing commanding views of the surrounding countryside and mountains.
Your wedding ceremony will take place in the spectacular gardens of Otahuna which were cultivated under the direction of A E Lowe who trained at Kew Gardens, London. A unique blend of New Zealand natives and English colonial planting. The original gardens feature many rare and exotic oaks, many of which are now protected by law. In case of inclement weather the Drawing Room is a charming place for your wedding ceremony overlooking the gardens.
Afterwards enjoy an elegant wedding dinner in The Grand Dining Room with your guests or a sumptuous banquet somewhere more unusual like the Apple House, the Stables, the remains of the Old Orchard, the Citrus Garden or the Stallion Paddock. If a more intimate dining experience is called for, there are many comfortable nooks around the lodge (the Drawing Room for example) where you might dine in less formal surroundings. Then again, you might prefer a simple dinner for two on your verandah or in the privacy of your suite by a roaring fire. In the summer months, why not take a picnic down to the stream-fed lake. Otahuna can accommodate small weddings of up to 64 people for a sit down dinner.
